P4 Background

Also known as P to the fourth power, P4 is a six-year project to inspire and examine substantial innovation focused on changing the way family physicians are trained to practice medicine

The P4 initiative has the potential to inspire considerable changes in the content and structure of family medicine training.

A Call for Proposals seeking innovations in family medicine graduate medical education was announced in the Fall of 2006.

In February 2007 the residency programs selected to participate in the P4 residency demonstration project were announced.

In February 2008 the 2nd P4 learning Collaborative was convened in Autin, Texas.

Findings from the project are expected to guide future revisions in accreditation and content to ensure America’s future family doctors are proficient in using the most up-to-date tools and technologies to provide superior patient care.

P4 is administered by TransforMED, the AAFP's practice redesign initiative. The AFMRD and ABFM Foundation have pledged nearly $1.75 million to fund the initiative, only a portion of the financial commitment necessary to bring this project to fruition.

Family Medicine researchers from Oregon Health & Science University comprise the Evaluation Team. The P4 Steering Committee guides the project.
