P4 Residency Demonstration: Submission deadline extended to Monday, October 16, 2006

09/22/2006

Residency programs have more time to prepare and submit their proposals for innovation. The deadline for Stage 1 applications has been extended to October 16, 2006.

The purpose of the P4 initiative is to inspire and examine substantial innovation in the education and training of family physicians. "The process of developing a proposal for innovation requires a significant investment in faculty time and local resources and we want to ensure that programs have the time they need to prepare their best ideas," said Sam Jones, MD, co-chair of the P4 steering committee.

"We are very pleased by the level of interest and feedback we have received from residency programs and others interested in making this initiative a success. This is a collaborative process with the residency community and we've heard from many enthusiastic programs who indicated they needed a little more time to prepare their proposals. Based on this important feedback the executive committee decided to extend the CFP deadline to help ensure that all residencies had ample time to apply," said Terry McGeeney, M.D., president and chief executive officer of TransforMED.

"We thank those of you who have called for sharing your enthusiasm and especially your concerns," added Jones. We recognize that the timetable and funding are two key areas that have generated the most questions and we are actively working to address these two issues. Though we won't likely be able to provide firm funding details to applicants before the application deadline, we believe there are several organizations that will step forward to provide additional funding," said Jones.

Revised CFP Timetable

The P4 call for proposals is divided into two stages. Eligible residencies must submit a general proposal outline using the Stage 1 online submission form. (Go to http://www.transformed.com/p4.cfm for CFP details.) Following a careful review of all proposals, the P4 Steering Committee will invite selected residency applicants to submit a detailed, Stage 2-full proposal.

Below is the application and selection process timetable:

September 1 - October 16 (midnight) - call for Stage 1 proposals open. Stage 1 closes at midnight October 16, 2006.

October 31 - Selected residencies receive invitations to submit detailed proposal (stage 2-full proposal) to residency applicants

October 31 - Programs will be notified if they are not recommended for a stage 2 application.

December 15 - Deadline for stage 2-full proposal
